Signs and symptoms of toxicity: Clinical signs often develop 12-48 hours following ingestion. Horses are the species indicated for this toxicity. Range/Site Description: Abundant in low, moist areas in the eastern part of the state. The dead leaves that fall in Autumn and the leaves on a live tree pose no threat. Leaf Type: Deciduous Texas Native: Firewise: Tree Description: A medium sized, fast-growing tree that reaches 90 feet tall and a trunk to 2 feet in diameter, red maple has a somewhat narrow, rounded crown. Specifically, the leaves must be dried or wilted, like those found on a snapped branch after a high wind storm. It is the leaves of the red maple tree that are dangerous. Red maple trees, found throughout the eastern United States and Canada, are not entirely toxic to pets.
